After harvesting the Merlot during the second week of October 2016, the grapes for this wine were destemmed at the winery and transferred to tanks. Fermentation occurred at a minimum of 88°F in small-lot, stainless steel tanks. During fermentation, pump-overs were used for intense extraction of color and flavor. Malolactic fermentation was completed to create a round mouthfeel and soften the wine. The wine was aged in 225 and 265-liter barrels for 18 months in a combination of 65% French, 29% American and 6% Hungarian oak barrels, 56% of which were new.
Bold and fruit-forward, our Element Red Blend is our expression of Wahluke Slope appellation. Primarily Merlot-led, our 2016 vintage offers a stunning example of what Washington can do with this classic varietal. On the palate, intense aromas of toasted oak are followed by dark fruit, ripe Bing cherry, blending with subtle hints of brown spice and mocha. Mouth-filling tannins lead to a long, lingering and smooth finish. Pair this wine with Lasagna or your favorite Ragu.
