The blocks of the Syrah were harvested on September 11th, 12th and 19th of 2015. The grapes for this wine were de-stemmed at the winery and transferred to small lot stainless tanks and one-ton bin fermenters. Fermentation occurred at 85°F to 90°F after a day of cold soak on the skins. During fermentation, pump overs on the tanks and punch downs on the bins were used for intense extraction of color and flavor. Malolactic fermentation was completed to create a complex, rounder mouthfeel. All lots were barrel aged in 225-liter barrels for 16 months in a combination 81% French, 8% American and 11% Hungarian oak barrels. There were 54% new barrels used in the blend.
Columbia Winery Horse Heaven Hills Syrah immediately opens with intense aromas of bright red fruit, clove, and chocolate. Hints of sweet caramel from time spent aging in French and American oak are complemented dark coffee from a portion of wine aged in Hungarian barrels. On the palate, this Syrah is fruit-forward, offering notes of boysenberry, dark plum and spice. A plush mouthfeel is followed by a luscious, lingering finish.
