A majority of the grapes for our 2011 GSM Red Blend were selected from the Yakima Valley, which lies within the larger Columbia Valley AVA. Considered the “First Growth” in Washington State, Yakima was the first AVA christened in the Pacific Northwest 30 years ago. The region is defined by its ideal combination of uniquely layered basalt soils created by prehistoric floods and ancient volcanoes, as well as its sun-drenched slopes that enjoy an extended 190-day long growing season. In 2011, the Yakima Valley had an early season freeze that was followed by a cooler-than-usual growing season. The cooler temperatures lengthened the time on the vine, resulting in well-balanced, ageworthy wines with good concentration and full, rich flavors.
Our Columbia Winery GSM Red Blend opens with a nose of red fruit layered with spicy oak. On the palate, luscious flavors of ripe blackberry and plum unfold as soft tannins create a smooth mouthfeel. A well-balanced acidity and lingering finish make this blend an ideal match for a variety of game meats topped with an earthy mushroom sauce.
