 Riesling Ice Wine 375 ml

Riesling Ice Wine 375 ml

Columbia Winery only produces ice wine in the years that our vineyards get a hard freeze so that the frozen grapes are picked t from the vine and go to press still frozen. This typically occurs when the temperature gets between  14  to 18 degrees Fahrenheit. In 2005 (our inaugural vintage) and 2006, we picked on October 31 both years. Columbia’s Riesling Ice Wine is light amber in color with spice and a touch of lychee nut on the nose. Abundant, mouth-filling flavors of apricot, lychee, hints of spice and peach nectar on the palate.

About This Wine:
Named for one of the original founders of Associated Vintners, Inc. (original name for Columbia Winery), Phil Church Vineyard is located along the banks of the Roza irrigation canal near Sunnyside, Washington. Phil Church was a Meteorology professor at the University of Washington who recognized the excellent vinifera grape growing potential in eastern Washington during the late 1950’s. Using his analysis, the AVI founders began experimenting with European varietals in the state, helping to open doors for the Washington wine industry.

Situated at 1,100 feet above sea level, Phil Church Vineyard is ideal for growing white varietals, including Riesling, Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Muscat Canelli, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The cool site causes these grapes to ripen later in the season, with higher natural acidity and vibrant fruit characters.
